First owned by Sir Norman Wisdom OBE, this 1998 BMW 528SE is offered enticingly at no reserve.
Funny man, the late Sir Norman Wisdom OBE, entertained generations with his special brand of humour that made him a global star of stage and screen… but lesser known is his love of cars, and collecting the same.
Being the son of a chauffeur may have been the catalyst, but whatever prompted his interest in fine motor cars, it never diminished during his long life, as evidenced by ‘a car full of Wisdom’ coming to sale by Historics at Ascot Racecourse on 2nd March.
In 1998, at the tender age of 83, Wisdom ordered the new BMW 528SE from Rydale BMW, Newport, taking delivery in early 1999. He drove ‘NMN16 ‘ extensively from his long time home on the Isle of Man, and also upgraded the looks with an Alpina body kit and split rim alloy wheels at not insignificant expense, adding to the already high ‘SE’ specification.
The car left Sir Norman’s ownership and the Isle of Man after five years and, following a very brief spell at a motor trader, it was purchased by the current vendor who has enjoyed the car since 2004.
Presented in the elegant Glacier green metallic coachwork and Stone Green Over Black leather interior, the car comes to market with 168,000 miles and a good history file, including a copy of the original V5 registration document showing Sir Norman Wisdom’s name as the original owner
Enticingly, it is offered by Historics at the Ascot sale on 2nd March at no reserve, providing a wonderful opportunity to acquire not only a fine classic BMW but one owned by an icon of humour, described by Sir Charlie Chaplin as his’ favourite clown’.
Sir Norman Wisdom passed away in 2010 at the age of 95.
