High-performance masterpiece by Paul Karslake FRSA turns heads
Paul Karslake FRSA, the celebrated contemporary artist, is also a self-confessed car nut and a lifetime fan of Lewis Hamilton. So when all three collide, you can expect fireworks.
The touchpaper was Lewis Hamilton’s fifth F1 World Championship. It triggered a frenzy of all-hours action by Paul at his Leigh-on-Sea studio from which has emerged his uniquely-powerful tribute to Hamilton and his team, in the shape of a stunningly-liveried and uprated 155mph Mercedes-Benz CLK 500 of 2002 vintage. This highly-collectible one-off car comes to sale with Historics, on Saturday, 24th November.
“I just love the livery on Lewis’s F1 car” said Paul, “and that started the whole thing off. “This RHD 5-litre CLK 500 was the ideal weapon to base it on, but it looked a little conservative so I thought I’d go to town on it - After all, it is a sporty Avantgarde version”, he quipped.
At the heart of this unique piece of moving art is Paul’s whimsical and irrepressible talent as an accomplished contemporary artist. Through a mix of his handpainting and award-winning airbrush skills he has cloned the livery of Hamilton’s 2018 F1 car with the CLK. It features immense detail, including Hamilton’s face cocooned in Paul’s trademark Union Jack on the bonnet and his helmet pictured on the bootlid. When completed, six coats of clear lacquer were applied to the entire paintwork to give it depth and longevity.
Nevertheless, the beauty of Paul’s creation is more than skin deep, as befits his petrolhead status: “The addition of the full bodykit and a specially-designed rear spoiler before I started added nicely to the look I wanted to achieve, but there are also some serious tweaks hiding beneath the surface, and it's a brilliant fun car to drive.”
The modifications include a fresh set of Cosmis Racing alloy wheels, lowered and uprated Bilstein suspension, custom-built performance exhaust and an ECU re-map, all of which add to the allure and value of the uniquely-presented, V8-powered CLK Coupé which in standard trim produces a hearty 306bhp.
With strong appeal amongst both enthusiasts and collectors, significant interest in this one-off masterpiece is anticipated at an estimate of £20,000-£25,000 as it comes to sale.
