The 348 Challenge cars are perhaps the most interesting and significant model of the 348 family and represent an important piece of Ferrari history as the first of a great line of Challenge series models. The series debuted in 1993 and included the Italian and European series whose cars were required to be road legal as well being driven on the track. It was rumoured that the European and cars supplied to Japan received a higher power output than that of the US cars; something that has never actually been confirmed by Ferrari. The engine used in the participating cars was indeed similar to the road car with the only noticeable changes being slick tyres, new body kit, better brake-pads, roll-bar, smaller battery in a different position and seat belts; however in 1994, the G-spec engined cars had to be modified with the H-spec cylinder heads and injection system. Although replaced by the F355 Challenge after its final season in 1995, the 348 will forever be seen as the car that set the trend giving rise to the later Challenge Stredale Ferrari models which, to this day, are road going incarnations of their track only Challenge counterparts; something the 348 did not require. Many cars could be converted to Challenge specification with Ferrari charging $16,500 for the necessary kit; however, it is believed 45 cars were built at the factory as Challenge cars consisting of 13 TS and 32 TB cars.
We are informed that this is an original factory built example on offer today and was supplied new to Japan and has not seen any race action but has been fitted with upgrades such as Ferrari F40 lights and F40 LM brakes together with more road going bucket race seats. This rare and collectable example of one of the most significant cars in Ferrari's history is presented in Rosso Corsa with black trim and was purchased by our vendor and imported to the UK in 2016 to complement a rare and eclectic sports car collection. It benefits from new plugs with a recent recommissioning and presents in stunning order throughout. Rarely coming to the open market, the most recent public sale of a Challenge 348 achieved €241,500 and this example of a factory built 348 is offered with a UK registration document and can only be described as the ultimate track car with provenance and performance to match.
