The Ford Escort was introduced in the United Kingdom at the end of 1967, making its show debut at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968. The Escort was a commercial success in many parts of Western Europe, but nowhere more than in the UK, where it was the national best seller of the 1960’s. In June 1974, less than six years after the car's UK introduction, Ford announced the completion of the two millionth Ford Escort, a milestone unmatched by any Ford model outside the US. The Mk. I featured contemporary styling cues in tune with its time; a subtle Detroit-inspired ‘Coke bottle’ waistline and the ‘dogbone’ shaped front grille - arguably the car's most famous stylistic feature. Ford’s successes with the Lotus Cortina led to the idea of fitting the mechanicals into the Escort resulting in the Escort Twin Cam being born and becoming one of Ford’s most famous production cars. The Escort Twin-Cam went on to achieve many international race and rally victories during its short production life between 1968 and 1971.
This Escort Mk. I was first registered on 1st July 1969 and at the time was a standard 1100cc car. In 2017 the car underwent an extensive restoration and modification program. The bodyshell was a good solid base to start from, having been totally stripped, any corrosion was cut out and at the same time, new front wings were fitted with the lightly flared arches. The bodyshell, which is the same as the shells Ford used to build their AVO competition cars, was then painted in the correct Twin Cam colour of Ermine White. The engine is a Sierra 2.0 litre Twin Cam and the gearbox is a Sierra MT75 five-speed unit. 45 DCOE Weber carburettors are fitted offering the familiar sound and performance to be expected from such an engine. A World Cup front crossmember has been fitted, along with an Ashley exhaust system and Megajolt ignition. Additional work includes a five-link rear axle with slipper springs, adjustable gas shock absorbers and a rear brake disc conversion. A new set of 5.5J wheels and tyres have been fitted as have coilover Gaz adjustable front shock absorbers. The dashboard has the correct six dial binnacle with a 140mph speedometer. To be expected, the interior is black and has the correct period contour seats fitted. Supplied with a V5C registration document (still showing it as a 1098cc) and a history file, this Escort Twin Cam Evocation, looks, sounds and drives like a Twin Cam. As a bonus this Escort is ULEZ compliant.
