Successor to the R-Type, the Bentley S1 was introduced in 1955 with a whole new chassis; the car's wheelbase had been extended three inches to 123”, and the luggage compartment was expanded. The S1 had softer suspension than the R-Type, with electrically controlled rear shock absorbers. Brakes had been improved, and the steering was lighter, even more so after 1957 with optional power assisted steering. This model marked the final integration of Bentley with Rolls-Royce – the standard saloons were now entirely alike, but for grilles and badging.
This elegant Bentley S1 with Standard Steel body was built in 1957 and was registered on 1st January 1958. It is fitted with power steering, a £110 extra when new, as well as a sunroof, which functions as it should. The copy build sheet confirms that the car was originally green with a beige interior and was changed to its present blue in 1991 and its interior remains beige. Presented to auction with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate valid until June 2024 in spite of its exempt status by virtue of age, an owner’s handbook and details of the original sale from leading franchised dealer H.R. Owen.
