The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a classic car that holds a special place in automotive history. Produced from 1955 to 1974, it was a collaboration between the German automaker Volkswagen and the renowned Italian design firm, Carrozzeria Ghia. The Karmann Ghia combined the reliable and efficient mechanical components of the Volkswagen Beetle with a sleek, stylish body designed by Luigi Segre at Ghia. The Karmann Ghia's timeless design is characterised by its low, sweeping roofline, elegant curves, and clean lines. Its compact size and lightweight construction made it nimble on the road and a pleasure to drive. The car's rear-mounted air-cooled engine provided adequate power for its time. More than 445,000 Karmann Ghia’s were produced in Germany over the car's production life, not including the Type 34 variant. Volkswagen Brazil produced a further 41,600 Type 34s for the South American market between 1962 and 1975.
This lovely 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was purchased by the current owner in 1997 and was added to his collection of classic cars. During his ownership, the car hasn’t been driven very far and it is believed that the mileage is correct at 49,000 miles. In 2000, he had the bodywork repaired and then repainted in the original colour scheme of orange with a black roof. The black interior is completely original and unmarked, the only fault is a small crack in the top of dashboard. Described by the owner as mechanically sound, and at the time of viewing the car for entry into this auction it started first time and ran beautifully after being stood for five weeks. This Karmann Ghia is supplied with a V5C registration document and a file that contains old invoices and a couple of old MoT test certificate predating the purchase in 1997 which also show the low mileage. The Karmann Ghia became a popular choice among car enthusiasts who sought a stylish and sporty vehicle without breaking the bank. It gained a reputation for its charm, reliability, and accessible maintenance.
