Lot 252 - 1990 Rover Mini ‘Checkmate’
|Odometer reading||72,054 miles|
|Result||Sold - £4,032|
Special editions usually make sense. They tend to get lots of extra kit and represent excellent value for money. Yet while the Checkmate is distinctive and offers lots more equipment than the standard Cooper S, it's pricey. Three fully loaded special-edition cars have arrived. The Checkmate, The Flame Red and The Racing Green. Overall, they have focused on improving the Mini's aesthetics rather than its performance. Outside, it gets the specialist chequered stickers and new 17” alloys wheels.
Step inside and, most noticeable is the new upholstery. Good quality red leather throughout with, in this instance, a wood and carbon fibre effect dashboard and tilting sunroof. Other extras over the standard car include air-conditioning, front rally-style foglights and upgraded Xenon headlamps and a limited slip differential to help put the supercharged 1.6's 170bhp on to the road. An aftermarket Goodman’s stereo and CD player can also be found including twin 6”x 9” JVC speakers mounted to the rear parcel shelf. It should be noted that whilst Minis in general are commonplace, these limited editions are relatively rare and buyers will be investing in exclusivity.
