The Mercedes-Benz SL class has been manufactured since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German 'Sport Leicht' or 'Sport Light' and was first applied to the 300 SL 'Gullwing,' named after the upward-opening doors. The term SL-Class refers to the marketing variations of the vehicle, including the numerous engine configurations spanning five design generations. The Mercedes-Benz R107 and C107 cars were produced from 1971 through to 1989, being the second longest single series ever produced by Mercedes-Benz after the G-Class. The R107 took the chassis components of the mid-size W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class (W116). The SL variant was a two seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top, hardtop and optional foldable seats for the rear bench.
Manufactured in 1982 this 500 SL is in very good condition throughout. It has been treated to much work which included extensive repair and restoration of the bodywork, as well as being treated to a full bare-metal respray, the Signal Red paintwork is reported to be in excellent condition showing very few blemishes. The car has had a full body, trim and mechanical restoration, which included the replacement of the rear wheel arches, the sills, the floors, the jacking points and the bulkhead, as well as repairs to the boot floor and the fitment of new carpet throughout. Replacement body and window rubbers were also supplied by The SL Shop and a full Waxoyl treatment has been carried out on the underside of the car. As such the interior is in very good shape, and the leather upholstery has been re-connolised throughout. New carpets have also been fitted at a cost of £900, and new sound deadening and underlay fitted. This 500 SL’s most recent maintenance was carried out in June 2021 by main dealer Mercedes-Benz Darlington. In wonderful condition this example is ready to be enjoyed by its new custodian.
