The TR-Tec Group of companies, trading as Backdraft Racing South Africa, was established in the city of Durban in 2002 and was initially producing two cars a month, with the aim of establishing itself as a niche market player producing high quality cars, mainly for the USA market. The development of the Mk. I Backdraft Roadster started in December 2000. The first examples of the Mk. I car were shown to the public in October of 2001. The cars are built in both left hand and right hand drive configurations to suit the requirements of the international community. In 2003, the production facility was consolidated into a 5,000sq/m building, south of Durban in South Africa and now producing approximately 200 cars a year. In the USA, Backdraft Racing Inc. was founded in January 2001 by two world champion car racers, Tony Marten and Reg Dodd and became the main partner and outlet for the South African company, the Backdraft Roadsters being built to the new owner’s specification in their state of the art facility. An all-new US head office and showroom, Backdraft Park, was opened in Boynton Beach in 2012. Backdraft are world leaders in high quality authentic replicas and custom built roadsters.

This fabulous vehicle was imported from South Africa in January 2020 just prior to the global shutdown. A full strip-down and respray in its original colour of Jet Black paintwork was completed by an internationally recognised Cobra specialist (Brooklands Cars, Weybridge), including fitment of a brand-new correct specification radiator and re-chroming of the roll bars. Additionally, Brooklands have supplied a brand new bespoke soft top hood. The vehicle has just successfully completed its IVA qualification and is thus now road legal to be driven in the UK. Anyone familiar with the IVA process will know how exacting are the requirements and the extensive work required to ensure compliance before a vehicle can be registered. As part of the IVA qualification process, a new mileage odometer was installed for UK road compliance and the mileage zeroed. When imported the vehicle had covered just 6,458km and has never been driven in the UK. Prior to release to the auction, the bodywork has undergone specialist polishing to present in immaculate showroom condition. Backdraft Racing Roadsters are highly regarded, particularly the chassis, and are very rare to find available on the UK market. The muscular style bodywork, wide planted rear and assured stance are typical of Backdraft and set them apart from similar roadsters. The unhindered roar of the 5.8 litre Ford Windsor 351 V8 through the stainless steel side skirt exhausts is simply tremendous and coupled with its stunning looks this is a vehicle that never fails to turn heads. The present owners have submitted an application with the DVLA for its first UK registration and this has yet to be received. Therefore, this vehicle will be sold at Auction without a V5 Log book but once this has been allocated, the new buyer will be informed. A new three year MoT test certificate will come with the car however.

Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.
