The Mercedes-Benz 190SL with the 300SL made history at the New York International Motor Sports Show in February 1954 by being the first new production Mercedes-Benz to be unveiled outside of Germany. The impression given by the 190SL alongside the bigger 300SL was neat and sporty with dashing lines. This was the trait of Mercedes-Benz designers Karl Wilfret and Walter Hacket. Despite opinions, the statistics tell their own tale as between May 1955 and February 1963, 25,881 of these cars were produced, it was a huge success for Mercedes-Benz. Its engine boasted four inline cylinders with a chain driven overhead camshaft and two Solex 44PHH carburettors, delivering a respectable 108bhp for that era. The body was a monocoque design, welded to the shortened chassis of the type 180 saloon. A racing version with aluminium doors and a small windscreen was never produced although these parts could be ordered from the factory for weekend racing.
This very original, rust-free Mercedes-Benz 190 SL roadster was supplied new to California, USA in 1959 and issued with a black registration plate which it retained until being imported into the United Kingdom and put into a private collection about three years ago. While in California the Solex carburettors were replaced with two, twin choke Weber carburettors. Finished in the original Blue Grey (DB166) with a rare factory hardtop painted Delphin Blue (DB380) and with cream interior (L.2), this 190SL Roadster was UK registered and issued with a V5 registration document in July this year. The car is also supplied with photocopies of the US title certificate. This very original 190 SL, in one of the prettiest colour combinations, has spent its entire existence, until its importation, in the warm, dry climate of California where the best original cars come from in the US.
