In 1963, Mercedes-Benz debuted an all-new roadster to replace the 190 SL and 300 SL - the 230 SL. The 230 SL 'Pagoda' was a stunning Paul Bracq designed two-seat convertible that followed Mercedes' new design language, featuring crisp lines and upright headlights. To save on weight, the bonnet, door-skins, boot lid, and tonneau cover were all composed of aluminium. The nickname 'Pagoda' was quickly adopted thanks to the slightly concave roof on the optional removable hardtop that resembled a pagoda roof. In 1967, Mercedes introduced the third and final iteration of the 'Pagoda', the 280 SL, and it then became apparent that some cars don't change, they just get better. The 280 featured the same modified W111 chassis with a rear swing axle and independent front suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Power came from a 2.8 litre version of Mercedes inline-six and used Bosch fuel injection. A charming model with capable handling and braking thanks to its suspension and all-wheel disc brakes. These roadsters also have one of the most beautiful bodies produced in the 1960s. Thanks to their robust inline-six and their luxurious Mercedes interior, they are wonderful cars to be driven and enjoyed.
This excellent, right hand drive, 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda was supplied new by Hoffman’s of Sheffield and was maintained and serviced by them and Europa Cars Ltd until 1978 and then by recognised Mercedes specialists. The car is matching numbers and the original engine has benefitted from a full rebuild by Roger Edwards Motors in 2000 at 74,264 miles and is reported to run and drive like new with the last service carried out in July 2020, less than 500 miles ago. In addition in 2021 all three engine mounts and both horns have been renewed at a cost of £1,500. This car is supplied with a factory hardtop, power steering, a Becker radio and white steering wheel & gear knob. This beautiful 280 SL is finished in the most attractive and desirable colour combination of Mercedes Dark Green, number 268, with the correct cognac Mercedes Tex interior and tan soft top. The interior is finished with the correct square weave carpet and the matt wood trim. The paintwork is in excellent condition throughout with the shut lines being as good as when the car left the factory. Undoubtedly the reason for this is that although the car was repainted a few years ago it has never been or needed to be fully restored. This example has been very well maintained and cherished by all its custodians of which there have only been seven from new including a husband & wife and last owner since 2008 - hence its condition today. This 280 SL Pagoda is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in March 2022, the original owner’s handbook and stamped service book, a good history file and two workshop manuals. These Pagodas are always a pleasure to drive, particularly in good weather when the roof is down and the smooth six-cylinder engine can be enjoyed, without doubt the late model 280 SL is the one to have!
