The Ferrari 348 is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive, V8 powered, two-seat sports car replacing the 328 in 1989 and continuing until 1995. Journalists described the 348 as ‘something quite special’ and the engine being the formative element in defining the car's character, rising in an ‘operatic crescendo’ having the ‘power to raise goose bumps as Pavarotti climbing to that note in Nessun Dorma.’ Badged 348 TB for the coupé (Berlinetta) and 348 TS (Spider) for the targa versions, it features a naturally aspirated 3.4 litre version of the quad-cam, four valve per cylinder engine which was originally found in the 288GTO. The 'T' in the model name TB and TS refers to the transverse position of the gearbox and the 348 was equipped with a dry-sump oil system to prevent oil starvation at high speeds and during hard cornering. It was also fitted with innovative adjustable ride height suspension and a removable rear subframe to speed up the removal of the engine for maintenance. Interestingly, two Ferrari 348s were used as two of the three test mules for the Ferrari Enzo, namely M1 and M3 respectively and when it made its debut in September 1989 at the Frankfurt Auto Show it was cited as 'Best in Show' by Road & Track and AutoWeek who later names the 348 as ‘one of the ten best cars in the world.’
Imported to the UK in 1998, this example showing 78,969 Kilometres on the odometer is offered in the desirable Rosso Corsa over Crema leather interior. The Ferrari was acquired by the current vendor in 2014 and has resided in his significant private collection ever since. Used sparingly in recent years some light recommissioning may be necessary. Offered with various sundry invoices, the UK registration document and various MoT test certificates, this 348 TB comes to auction with a very attractive estimate and should certainly not be overlooked. The Ferrari 348 TB models are becoming increasingly popular and, we believe, this example will be a sound investment.
