The Bentley S2 Saloon and Continental models all received a shot in the arm in 1959 when introduced at London Motor Show, the straight-six engine was replaced by an all-new aluminium V8 unit. The more muscular engine, producing approximately 200bhp. Of course, there were many rumours as to what the origins of the V8 engine were but Rolls-Royce always maintained it was an entirely in-house effort. As before, the Bentley S2 was a badge-engineered Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and was built to the same standards and luxury. The 6230cc unit installed in the S2 was smoothly powerful and transformed the Bentley into a grand tourer capable of running silently at speed all day long.
This example is presented in good order throughout and was supplied on 3rd November 1960 by Rippon Bros Ltd in Huddersfield to the first owner, Eric Lord Esq, a local businessman in Rochdale who had specified from new the optional Rolls-Royce electric windows and tubeless tyres. Interestingly, in period, we believe this example was re-registered as a Rolls-Royce, as can be found on the current UK V5 registration certificate. We assume that the Rolls-Royce Cloud II grille was professionally fitted some time ago and this must have included a fair bit of workmanship as it included the bonnet being correctly aligned to the grille and unlike later ‘kits’ the original Rolls-Royce clocks are also found within the cabin.
This car had featured as part of a fleet of chauffeur driven cars for many years and was maintained where necessary, regardless of cost, before it was purchased by our vendor as part of a significant private collection. This example has benefitted from continual maintenance and when not in use it is stored inside in a professional ventilated Carcoon. The condition of the car is described as very good indeed, the silver over Tudor Grey paintwork and chrome show little signs of age, the red leather interior is also in good condition. The odometer reads 87,000 miles and we are informed this is a fully matching numbers UK example supplied new on 3rd November 1960. Representing a great investment opportunity, this will also give a collector or enthusiast many years of enjoyment.
