In the late 1960s, Ford set about developing the third-generation Cortina, the Mk. III, which would be produced in higher volumes than previous models, following the recent merger of Ford of Britain and Ford of Germany into the modern-day Ford of Europe. In late 1973, the Cortina Mk. III was given a facelift. The main differences were the dashboard and clocks which no longer sloped away from the driver's line of sight but introduced the flatter dash and clocks also found in the later Mk. IV and Mk. V Cortina’s, upgraded trim levels and revised grilles, revised rear lights, rectangular headlights for the XL, GT and the new 2000E, which replaced the GXL. Like many other Cortina’s, Mk. III’s were prone to rust and as a result it is estimated only about 1,000 now survive. Because of their rarity and the fact that they are now seen as an iconic car of the mid-70s, prices for Mk. III’s are rising steadily.
This stunning Ford has been restored over a three-year period and as such presents in superb condition. The paintwork is unmarked and is complemented by a vinyl roof. The tan interior presents exactly as it should, with the familiar pattern on the seats. The underside of the car is as tidy as she is on top and the under bonnet are exceptional. The 2.0 litre Pinto engine runs exceedingly well and offers brisk performance. Open the boot and it is clear no stone has been left unturned in the very comprehensive restoration. Offered for sale with a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 26th October 2021, this superb Ford Cortina 2000GT is sure to have an evocative effect on men of a certain age.
