Mercedes-Benz revived one of its most famous model designations of all time when it introduced the new 300 SL in 1985. However, on this occasion the newcomer was not a thinly disguised sports racer but the latest in a noble line of six-cylinder luxury Gran Turismos stretching back to the 230 SL of 1963 which was distinguished by its distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname ‘Pagoda top’. When the Type 113 finally finished with the 280 SL in 1971, it was replaced by the V8 engined Type 107, there would not be a six-cylinder model in the range for a further nine years, this changed in 1980 with the launch of the new 280 SL. This used the same twin overhead camshaft engine as the other ‘280’ models which gave 185bhp and a top speed of 127mph. When the 300 SL took over in 1985, it came with a single camshaft engine that produced a mere three horsepower more at the top end, the main gains over the superseded engine being a useful increase in torque and a marked reduction in fuel consumption.

This lovely 300 SL is from the last year of production, 1989, and being registered in August of that year. In 2017, it was the subject of a cosmetic restoration to the bodywork which included replacing the wheel arches and fitting a new black soft top, prior to this the car had been in a private collection and off the road since 2006. Finished in the original colour of Nautic Blue with a matching factory hardtop and the nice original beige leather interior. This 300 SL Roadster is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in January 2021 and the seller has had any advisories that were shown on the MoT repaired. The car also has a file containing bills from 2017 and the original handbooks and service book. In lovely condition, this Mercedes-Benz is ready to use and enjoyed, making this a real modern classic.
