The AC Buckland is a development from the AC two litre saloon, the highest produced vehicle by AC cars; however, the Bucklands are a rare breed with only sixty of the open tourers produced and even fewer being the straight door Mk. I. Offered here is the AC Buckland racer of one of the ACOC founders, Harold Day, who competed in events at Goodwood, Brands Hatch and Silverstone; most notably, this was the first AC to compete at the Chichester-based circuit. This example has been restored from the ground up retaining its original chassis and the period aluminium bodywork which has been stripped back to bare metal, media blasted and bodywork imperfections restored and, unlike most race cars, this also retains the fabric with which it left the factory. Because of this, the car is invited to Goodwood to compete in the Fordwater Trophy and did so as recently as 2018.
Additional original parts including hood frame, full windscreen frame and fuel tank are included in the sale; however, these will need refurbishing if the new custodian would like to convert the vehicle back to full road specification. The dashboard has the original gauges that have been mechanically rebuilt leaving the original AC faces on show. The racer features an aluminium radiator, oil cooling system, Kenlow fan, bespoke shock absorbers and a stainless steel exhaust system. Furthermore, all running gear has had a nut and bolt rebuild and the brake system includes braided brake hoses and up-rated brake shoes with competition linings. The drive train has been rebuilt including bearings, seals, and crown wheel and pinion. The fuel delivery system features a facet electric fuel pump in addition to an all electrical loom that has been overhauled. The wheels were shot blasted, painted and are now sporting Dunlop L section competition tyres. Other race specification features of the car include an aluminium, foam-filled fuel tank and safety features including a battery cut-off switch and fire extinguisher.
PAR 419 has a fascinating competition history. On 6th June 1953, the car first had its feet on the track at the Silverstone Eights Club event; it then went on to make history as the first known AC to compete at Goodwood on 25th July that same year and then once again on the 12th September. Additional events in 1953 included the Eastbourne rally and the Chichester Motor Club Concours. It only had a single showing in 1954 when it competed at the Eights Club at Silverstone in May. After a year off from the track, it returned to the Eights Club once again on 2nd June, 1956, after which it attended the AC Owners Club sprint meeting at Brands Hatch on 16th, September. It returned to the track on 1st, June the following year for a sprint in the company of three drivers; Harold and Elizabeth Day plus George Griggs. It then went on to compete in the Silverstone Eights Club once again, followed finally by the Heston Concours ‘57. Just under a decade later and under new custodianship, the Buckland appeared at Brands Hatch for an AC Owners Club Sprint in 1966. Later in its life, on 12th, September 2015, it competed in the Goodwood Revival in the Fordwater Trophy, 62 years to the day that Harold Day competed in the Handicap race in 1953. Its most recent outing was in the AC Owners Club sprint in November 2015 at Goodwood and it would have been awarded the Knickered Demon Trophy (Fastest AC engined AC) if the driver had been a club member.
A beautiful example with extensive provenance and race history, this is a unique opportunity to own a car that can rightly be described as part of AC and British motoring history and gets you entry into the Revival when the applicable race is scheduled!
