The XJ6 saloon was a lifesaving model for Jaguar Cars Ltd. Since it was first unveiled in 1968, the design has evolved through five generations to the present day. The first three models are differentiated only by slight styling or mechanical variations, sharing the same basic body shell and engine. The fourth and fifth generation XJ6's each incorporate major body, mechanical and electrical redesigns. The terminologies for the first three different versions of the XJ6 are: Series I (1968-73), Series II (1973-79) and Series III (1979-87). The XJ6 Series II was only cosmetically different from the XJ6 Series I; the front bumpers were raised to a standard height and the radiator grille was much smaller with horizontal bars. Early Series II's shared the same short 108.9" wheelbase but in 1972 the wheelbase was extended by four inches to 112.8" to create the long wheelbase model known as the XJ6L. Both six and 12 cylinder engine models were available.

This XJ6 long wheelbase 4.2 litre example is in 'time warp' condition and displays under 12,000 miles on the odometer which we have been informed is correct. The paperwork accompanying this car is an addition to the cars provenance and includes the original handbooks and previous MoT test certificates. In 1996, after having been in storage since 1985, the car won 'car of the day' at a Jaguar Drivers' Club Concours D'Elegance and came 2nd in a Concours event at an XJ event at Duxford. The brightwork is good throughout with only slight pitting due to its time in storage for which it has spent a large part of its life. The interior presents as it should on a car with so few miles, the paint work is in good order throughout as is the engine bay. Recently recommissioned and detailed, this car was the personal vehicle of our vendor, who sadly is no longer with us, a Jaguar Club member and enthusiast, this is rare example of the XJ6 with unrivalled originality.
