Few would disagree that Alfa Romeo make superb convertible motorcars. And so the legend continues with the Giulietta Spider, proportionally perfect and powered by Alfas classic all-alloy twin overhead camshaft engine with gearing via a four speed, all synchromesh gearbox. Although the 1900 had been its first successful post-war model, it was Alfa Romeo's next offering, the 1.3-litre Giulietta which established the 'small car, big performance' formula that would characterise the Milanese marque's finest offerings from then on. The Giulietta's arrival in 1954 caused a sensation and the original Giulietta Sprint Coupé was soon joined by Berlina and Spider versions sporting elegant coachwork designed and built by Pininfarina. Described by Cars Illustrated as “probably one of the most delightful small sports cars which will ever be produced”, the Giulietta Spider is certainly one of the most attractive Alfa Romeos of its day and remains highly regarded.

Presented today is an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider manufactured in November 1960, delivered to the US importer in the spring of 1961 and subsequently sold to a Californian resident. Imported into the UK in early 2011, it has since undergone a restoration although some patina has since re-emerged. The body itself was reportedly soda blasted back to bare metal whereupon it was found to be in excellent condition with no welding works required. The entire coachwork, inside, underneath (treated with modern stone chip protection) and external panels were etched-primed and refinished in the original colour of Alfa Rosso. Some paintwork on top of the wings has begun to crack although there is no corrosion to be seen underneath. The car could be described as at that mid-way point between happy to be used for another five years and needing repainting. Mechanically, we are informed, the engine was stripped, cleaned and reassembled with new bearings, piston rings, exhaust valves, timing chains as well as a reconditioned water pump and a new exhaust system. All of the suspension components were powder coated and overhauled where required. The original wheels have been refurbished and fitted with new 165x15 radial tyres. Detailed works include; re-chroming of the front and rear bumpers, the original grille, door handles and sundry items. To finish, this Giulietta has been re-trimmed by renowned Alfa Romeo specialists, Coburns of Swindon, works that include the original specification; black vinyl seats and red carpets. A new mohair hood has also being fitted by the same specialists. More recently, the engine has undergone another complete rebuild and a more modern five speed gearbox fitted more reliable and in keeping with today’s motoring conditions. Prices for these convertible Giuliettas have been rising strongly and this extremely usable example represents on opportunity to acquire one at a fraction of the re-build cost.
