- Award winning car
The European Touring Car Championship of the early 1970's encouraged performance manufacturers to build some rare and exciting homologation specials, notably Ford with their Escort and Capri derivatives and BMW with their CSL. Standing for 'Coupe Sport Leicht', the BMW 3.0 CSL was indeed light - having an aluminium bonnet, boot and doors combined with a reduced trim saving a valuable 300lbs in excess weight. With power as standard from the 3.0 straight six giving 206 bhp and a strong aero package (front chin spoiler and rear boot lid lip spoiler), the 1,039 CSLs produced by BMW are now highly collectable and sought after, particularly rare original righthand drive factory produced cars, such as this particular car.
Originally supplied by Park Lane BMW in London and registered on 13th March 1973, this 3.0 CSL presents in delightful condition. Finished in Taiga Green with contrasting black interior, this is car number 426 of 500 righthand drive examples supplied to the UK and was first registered to a Mr. Dennis Spight of Kent who kept the car for seven years. Being one of the original ‘City Package’ cars it has factory fitted chrome bumpers, electric windows, Scheel sports seats and slightly softer suspension for a more enjoyable driving experience. The car was then owned by a Mr. C. Holliday who entered the BMW into the world of concourse where it won best in class at the 40th anniversary BMW Car Club meet held at Longleat House. Supplied with a significant history folder, complete tool kit, owners’ manual together with awards and accolades awarded to this special car. It is rare to see a BMW 3.0 CSL and even rarer to find one in this condition.
