The MGB was launched in May 1962 to replace the MGA. Introduced as a four-cylinder roadster, a coupé with 2+2 seating was added in 1965 with production continuing until October 1980. The MGB GT sported a ground-breaking design by Pininfarina with the launch of its sporty 'hatchback' style. By combining the sloping rear window with the rear deck lid, the GT offered the utility of a hatchback while retaining the style and shape of a coupé. Acceleration of the GT was slightly slower than that of the roadster due to its increased weight although top speed was improved by 5mph to 105mph due to better aerodynamics.
This stunning MGB GT has been the subject of an incredibly thorough full body tub restoration, which started in 1992 and was finished in November 2017 – a real labour of love. At the time, it passed its MoT test certificate with no advisories and has now only covered 200 miles since. It will now come to the auction with a fresh MoT test certificate. Mechanically, everything has been rebuilt, engine, four speed gearbox (no overdrive) and all running gear. The car sounds great through its new stainless steel exhaust system.
This MGB has had many new body panels, which now are sporting its gleaming new red paintwork. The only diversion to the standard car is the four new Minilite wheels and there are new tyres all round. The interior has also been fully renewed with re-veneered dash and console, new underlay and sound deadening fibres. It also comes with new carpets, new seats, door cards and headlining, which are all in great condition. This special car is truly a delight to drive, with comprehensive carburettor set up and according to the owner, starts on the button. This car must not be confused with a normal bits and pieces refurbishment; it is fantastic and a credit to the restorer. The car comes with a lever arch folder full of invoices, receipts and photographs supporting the restoration.
