Lot 220 - 1956 Bentley S1 Continental Coupé by Park Ward
|Estimate||£128,000 - £140,000|
- Highly desirable Park Ward Coupé model
- Lovely patina
Launched in April 1955 the Bentley SI and the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud were virtually identical with the exception of the grille and badging details. Both of these models were recipients of Managing Director Arthur Sedgreaves’ new production and manufacturing techniques, which produced the Standard Steel Saloon. The Standard Steel Saloon fulfilled the company’s commercial requirements, but not necessarily those of all its customers. For those preferring something more elegant or more exclusive, England’s coachbuilders were still offering bespoke coachwork. As in true coachbuilding tradition, many design variations were possible on the same theme. Those who could afford such cars were limited only by their imagination, particularly regarding interior furnishings and custom touches. Most of the Bentley S’s were bodied by H.J. Mulliner and Park Ward, but James Young of Bromley also decided to produce bespoke coachwork for the S Continental.
This Bentley was delivered new to Mr. J Townley of Preston, Lancashire on 16th May 1956 in its original paint colour of Black Pearl over Dove Grey. This handsome and highly sought after example is now presented in the subtle colour combination of Sand over Sable with a contrasting deep red leather interior, exuding patina as one would expect and with the odour reminiscent of a traditional library full of leather bound books. This model is fitted with power steering and its smooth five litre is mated to an automatic gearbox. The coachline matches the interior leather colour and its fabulous coupé body styling is stunning with sweeping arches and long bonnet line. These really were and still are the epitome of British styling and manufacturing at its finest. The car comes with what the owner believes to be, the original tool kit and its original AA booklet.
