The BMW R80 RT with a two-cylinder four-stroke 800cc boxer engine and shaft drive, to the rear wheel, was built from 1982 to 1995. As a touring bike (RT for touring), it was equipped with a sweeping full fairing with a high windshield. The engine with 797cc and 50bhp power came from the BMW R80/7. Between 1982 to 1984 essentially the RT was a slimmed down version of the 'bigger sister' R 100 RT. In principle, the smaller engine was simply installed in the frame of the R 100 RT.
In some cases, these models did not even have their own manual (in BMW jargon 'logbook'), instead, the logbook of the nearly identical R 100 models was used. The differences to the R 100 RT were monochrome paint (without the typical black edges), the cylinder head cover was not painted, cylinder guard was only as optional extra, clock and voltmeter also only as an optional extra, case holder only as a special accessory, drum brake instead of disc brake on the rear wheel.
This example presents well in the original colour of purple and we are informed by the vendor it has been upgraded to the R100 RT specification. Now tax and MoT exempt, this example was first registered on 8th August 1984 and currently has an MoT test certificate valid until August 2019. Extras from new include the rare Krauser pannier racks, a voltmeter, clock and audible indicators. Since new, battery heated grips have been added, the brakes and master cylinder have also been updated. We are informed the bike has recently been treated to new paintwork, steel braided hoses, a new three piece clutch costing £580, battery and boasts a steel centre stand that cost our vendor in excessive of £200. Clearly an iconic silhouette, this bike has recently been serviced by our vendor and is offered without reserve, we think this is a very desirable motorcycle ready to go touring.
Guide price £6,000 - £9,000
