Manufactured from 1990 to 1995, Mercedes-Benz sold a high-performance version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500E. The 500E was created in close co-operation with Porsche; each one being hand-built by Porsche and transported back and forth between the Mercedes plant and Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany during assembly with a full 18 days being taken to complete each model. The 500E had a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 engine derived from the 500SL, with braking performance also coming from SL components. The 500E was manufactured as a four seat saloon and in lefthand drive only. The leather seats were supplied by Recaro with the fronts being electrically operated and heated.

The 500 E W124 holds an iconic place in the heads and hearts of Mercedes-Benz fans but should also do the same for Porsche enthusiasts as they were really hand built by Porsche in conjunction with Mercedes! This particular example was factory built (according to the original data card, presented with the car) with the following specification: Blue Black Metallic paintwork, black leather trim, electric memory driver’s seat, heated seats, driver & passenger airbags, electric sliding & tilting sunroof and an electric steering column. Supplied new in 1992 by the Berlin dealer ‘Heinz Hammer GmbH’, this car was purchased by its first UK based owner in 2004, supported by the sales invoice contained within the history file. The last time this vehicle changed hands was via the well respected classic Mercedes specialist ‘Charles Ironside’. It was prepared to the normal high standards set by Charles Ironside and described at the time as ‘The best in the UK’ in their sales advert, which is also present with the vehicle now. The car was purchased by a Manchester based solicitor who has a small collection of cars and it seems he barely used it! It is presented in the same condition as seen in its previous advert and it is therefore hard to argue with Mr. Ironside’s previous description; this Mercedes-Benz 500E is surely one of the best available on the market today!
