Mention Alfa Romeo of the 1960s and 1970s and what usually springs to mind is the marque’s 105 series coupé, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Bertone, thatwas considered to be one of his greatest designs. Not only as one of the best looking and handling classic saloon cars of the period, but the advanced specification, with its five-speed gearbox, all round disc brakes, independent suspension and powerful twin-cam engine, still has the capability to embarrass many of its modern counterparts.
This handsome example presented today was manufactured on 4th April 1972 in right hand drive, and delivered to Brussels, Belgium, during July of that year, very probably to a British serviceman or diplomat. The coachwork, in its colour of Verde Muschio Chiaro, is very straight with good shut lines, whilst the interior is in good order, benefitting from, what surely has to be, a professionally fitted steel sliding sunroof; probably dealer fitted in period. At some time during its life, this little Alfa Romeo has had the original 1290cc engine replaced with a 2.0 litre unit, the larger engine giving more power and, importantly, more torque making this a very usable motor car on today’s roads. Recent works have included, new twin brake servos, brake master cylinder, Stil-Auto alloy wheels fitted with new Michelin 185/70/14 tyres and a new boot rubber mat. This pretty Alfa Romeo was imported from Belgium in 2016 and has subsequently been UK registered. It comes with a file that includes an Alfa Romeo Classic – Certificate of Origin, UK V5C registration document, an Owner’s Manual, with French text and an MoT test certificate valid until November 2018. Today, it is hard to find a good right hand drive Bertone Coupé but here is an example, with an attractive estimate, that just awaits a lucky new owner.
