Lot 164 - 1993 Porsche 911 / 964 RS America

Just 701 RS Americas were built between 1992 and 1994; in 1993 617 of those were built with their rear seats replaced by carpeted storage; however the seating was restored for the 1994 models. Only four options were available on an RS America - an electric sunroof, air conditioning, a limited-slip differential, and a stereo system. Standard colours were limited to Guards Red, Black, or Grand Prix White, whilst the metallic colours of Midnight Blue and Polar Silver were available for an extra cost. Porsche's goal in creating the 964 RS was to offer a lightweight 911, producing a Carrera 2 stripped of most standard comfort features. However due to US import regulations the Carrera RS 3.6 was only available in Europe so it was slightly detuned to meet Department of Transport regulations and dubbed the RS America.

The RS America was fitted with M030 Sport suspension, which included progressively wound coil springs, a larger front anti-roll bar, and uprated shocks. Standard were larger Carrera 2 Turbo wheels and ‘Big Red’ disc brakes whilst a fixed whale tail replaced the Carrera 2's retractable wing. The RSA was quick, taking just 4.6 seconds to reach 60 mph and could reach a top speed in excess of 155 mph.

Porsche Cars North America CEO and President Fred Schwab famously claimed that "this is the car that the Porsche Club of America built," this after he and works driver Vic Elford had canvassed Porsche after club members expressed displeasure that the 911 was turning into a heavy GT car unsuitable for track sessions. Upon its introduction, Porsche declared that, "the 1993 911 RS America captures the spirit of the original RS with its emphasis on performance."

This 1993 RS America is the 17th model built out of a total production of 701 cars and was originally delivered and sold new in New York with two options; air conditioning and a stereo and no sunroof. Exported to Germany in 2009, the car was rebuilt by renowned Porsche specialists Rinaldi Racing, Rinaldi provided this example with a phenomenal power to weight ratio and, with the help of a remap by Victor Gynther and a supercharger fitted, a power output of 360 bhp was claimed at the time of completion. A G50 40/40 LSD six-speed gearbox is fitted, together with a new rear axle in 2014. A more in-depth mechanical specification is available within the car’s history file. Recently Heritage AutoWerks have been commissioned with returning this car closer to its original specification; however the BBS Magnesium 18 x 8.5 and 18 x 10 wheels give this RS America a very aggressive stance adding to the overall look so our vendor has kept them fitted. An amazing 964 that offers huge modern performance figures and will offer its new custodian a great deal of fun indeed!
