The Mercedes-Benz SL (Sport Leicht) has been in production since 1954 with perhaps the most influential model being the W113 Pagoda of 1963. This second generation evolved from the 230SL to 250SL, finally becoming the 280SL. The W113 was replaced by the W107 in 1971 and as the engines became larger, the bodywork and weight of the cars also increased, as so often happens in mid-life! The SL improved through the years with technical innovation but still managed to keep its fundamental character and identity of an up-market, high quality sports car. Its reputation went from strength to strength and it was rare to see an episode of Dallas or Dynasty in the 1980's without an SL making a star appearance. The genius soft-top mechanism which folds down out of sight under a panel ahead of the boot lid gave the car a beautifully sleek, uncluttered appearance. Of all the engine offerings the 280 remains the most sought after with the smaller 2.8 litre engine offering plenty of power but with the advantage of less weight which improved handling.

This great Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster has covered just 66,500 miles from new and has benefitted from recent cosmetic work including a full respray to a very high standard in the original colour of Birchwood Green metallic and is complemented by a near flawless biscuit interior. This 280 SL is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in September 2018 and a history file including comprehensively stamped service booklet including last service at 66,000 miles, a wealth of old MoT test certificates helping verify the mileage, plenty of Mercedes-Benz sales invoices, original owner's manual and handbooks and even the original spare key. This example is a rare find, ready for the summer and hours of motoring enjoyment. With many similar models on offer at double the price, this is a potential good investment for years to come.
