This extremely interesting MGF was built at the Longbridge factory with chassis number SPL2037M227D1V428 as a pre production development car for the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995. After the show the car was flown back from Japan and stored at Longbridge. On 13th October 1995, it was agreed by the directors at MG Rover that the car would be fully prepared for hill climbs, sprints and track events. The car would be used and run at the events by Mr Kim Johnson, also a director (who became director of MG sport & Racing Ltd) and Tim King (principal Engineer MG Rover) for promoting the New MGF at these events. The car was then entered into a full season of hill climbs in 1996 and was not road registered so it was transported around the country by trailer. This car was fitted with a special lightweight bonnet and boot lid which was made in the experimental department at the MG Rover plant at Cowley, this was the only one ever made.
The car continued to be used for sprints ,hill climbs, and track events each year until MG Rover closed for business in 2004. When the car was handed back, it was the put into the MG Rover closure auction and Tim King bought the car and was soon back driving it again. The car was then road registered. It continued to be used as a hill climb/sprint car up until about 18 months ago and since then it has been used as a fast road car.The car looks the same today as it did when MG Rover owned and raced it, including its special bonnet and boot lid, wheels, front marine ply splitter, roll cage, light- weight hard top, built in fire extinguisher, competition seat and six point harness.
Amazingly the car has still only covered a mere 8630km (5362 miles) which means ultimately it has done more miles in the air than on the road!. This car really is a very special part of the MG motorsport history and accompanying the car is a huge history file including all the agreements with Kim Johnson and MG Rover outlining conditions of its use, photos of the car in competitions , events attended, results, history of work done , all MoT certificates and lots more . The car comes with an MoT test certificate valid until February 2019. This makes for an attractive and exciting addition to any collection or just simply as a fast road/race car with a fabulous and unique history.
