Offered from a private collection, this Triumph Stag was registered during the last year of manufacture and is presented in exemplary condition. The collector had a passion for acquiring motor cars and taking them to the highest standards. Such was this passion, that the gentleman employed two full time specialists to restore and fettle motor cars solely on his behalf. The project began in February, 2006 with the purchase of this Triumph. All ancillary parts were removed; including the engine and gearbox, whilst the bodywork was then stripped back to bare metal externally with any areas of corrosion cut out and replaced with new metal. The coachwork was then refinished in its original colour of Triumph colour code 19 White. During this period, a new set of carpets, hood and wheels were fitted. In 2015, the gentleman moved within the same village and the car was then registered in his wife’s name. An extensive file shows receipts for parts and works that do include an engine rebuild in 2002 with the mileage recorded at 46,554 and that relates to only just over 4,000 miles completed since that rebuild. The tyres, although with excellent tread, have recently been replaced due to their age; in all, no expense has been spared to maintain this Triumph Stag to the high level displayed today.
On inspection, the coachwork is excellent, both on top and upon the undersides with excellent panel gaps adding to the feel of quality this particular Stag possesses. The interior is inviting, the original seats showing little or no sign of wear or sagging. The woodwork is unblemished and, of course, as previously mentioned, the carpets are as new. On a recent test, the Triumph started easily and soon settled to a smooth idle, the lovely V8 burble providing the sound track. On the road, the Stag’s suspension and steering felt tight and responsive whilst the automatic gearbox changed ratios smoothly and quickly. This is a UK registered Triumph Stag that comes with an MoT test certificate with no advisories, valid until July 2018 and the history includes the aforementioned receipts, an owner’s manual and an interesting letter from a previous owner dated 8th July, 2004.
The model was designed as a luxury four seat sports car with the benefit of being powered by Triumph’s own three litre V8 power unit. Come 1977, the early reliability problems had been dealt with and today, with an excellent owner’s club and specialist spares and maintenance back up, these 1970s sports tourers are ideal for fast and comfortable touring whilst being easily maintained. We encouraged you to view both the history file and this motor car in the flesh, as we believe that this is one of the finest examples available today.
