We are delighted to offer this Lancia Sport Zagato that has been extensively built to Competizione specification. HBH 659K started life as a 1300 Zagato but when it was acquired by the vendor, in 2009, it was discovered, not only to require restoration, but to also have a 1600cc engine and gearbox fitted as well as a front sub frame from a 1600 Fanalone. In period, this specification was for the Competizione Group 4 cars that used either the 1300cc or 1600cc engine depending on the race series. With this discovery, a decision was made to restore the car with Competizione specifications where possible.
The Zagato was completely stripped back and rebuilt using original Lancia parts whilst still retaining an alloy driver’s door. The Competizione arches are original alloy items that have been blended in and strengthened to alleviate any cracking issues. The coachwork has been finished to a high standard in its original colour of Rosso Corsa with white painted stripes and original Competizione decals applied. The well-respected John Alker Motor Bodies of Chorley, Lancashire, carried out the refinishing works. Mechanically, this Zagato is built to a high specification which is detailed within the history file but in short includes; the engine built to Group 4 specification that includes, high compression forged pistons, polished and ported cylinder head, stainless steel valve seats, large valves, Colisbro valve guides, fast road camshafts, baffled sump, matched and dowelled oil galleries, con rods - shot peened and balanced and a lightened and balanced flywheel. Fuel is supplied by the Dell’Orto DHLA 45 carburettors and sparks via a custom and programmable distributor feeding the NGK platinum spark plugs. Exhaust gases are catered for via the Group 4 pattern four-branch Zircotec coated manifold mated to the custom stainless steel exhaust system. A lightweight alternator, starter motor and a smaller uprated Odyssey battery have been added to reduce weight. The braking, suspension and steering has been upgraded and completely overhauled and includes poly bushes all around with new Koni shock adjustable absorbers. On the inside, the original seats have been recovered in leather to the optional sports specification and include the correct Zagato head restraints. All vinyl trim, carpets and headlining have also been replaced whilst the boot trim remains original. The heater has been retained, unlike the Competizione cars, to maintain a civilised environment for UK roads. HBH 659K is a righthand drive Lancia that is UK registered and, we are informed, will arrive at the sale with a fresh MoT test certificate. Spare keys are included whilst the history file includes a well-documented record of the build, including photographs on a CD, technical notes and an original handbook.
