Designed by Dr. Orazio Satta Puglia, the Alfa Romeo Giulia may, initially, appear somewhat square, however, look more closely the detailed swaging along the roof, wings and doors along with a subtle roof spoiler and swaged Kamm tail and it becomes difficult to spot a square line. These features resulted in a four-door saloon that had the same drag coefficient as a Porsche 911 when introduced to the motoring press at Monza in 1962. The Giulia Super is considered by many 'Alfisti' as the best Alfa Romeo of the period, with its twin cam engine, five-speed gearbox and discs brakes on all four wheels whilst being capable of carrying up to five passengers in comfort and at speed; the model most sought after being the rare 'Bollino d'Oro' (Golden Tag). The Bollino d'Oro was first seen in March 1965 and was revised in September 1967 with the Alfa Romeo Sprint GT Veloce steering wheel and cylinder head, rolled back front seats, five bar horizontal grill, stainless steel headlamp trims, lower case Alfa Romeo scripts on the bonnet and boot lid, passenger external door lock, two-speed wiper system and wheel trims amongst others and retaining the round gold Alfa Romeo badges on the rear screen pillars.
We are please to present this 1968 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super Bollino d'Oro that was the demonstrator for Alfa Romeo (GB) Ltd., Sloane Street, London, SW1. A letter, from the Alfa Romeo Centro Documentazione, confirms that this Giulia was manufactured on 20thOctober 1967 and sold to Alfa Romeo UK, London on 28th February 1968 and was first registered on 28th May 1968. The Giulia was supplied in the colours of Amaranth red with black skai interior. On inspection, the coachwork requires restoration, however, the undersides are in very good order and spares back up for these models have never been better with several specialists catering for virtually everything that may be required; a situation that is better now than when these motor cars were new. On a recent test, this Alfa Romeo started easily, sounding very good with its tubular exhaust manifold and drove well with all gears functioning as expected with the brakes pulling the Giulia to a stop in a confident manner. The steering, always a delight on these motor cars, was light and easy to use. This UK registered, 1600cc, Alfa Romeo has a history file that does include the original green style log book from 1968 verifying its provenance as an Alfa Romeo (GB) Ltd. motor car. This rare Bollino d'Oro forms an important part of the Alfa Romeo history within the UK and may be described as requiring works to the external coachwork, however, it does come with an MoT test certificate valid until March 2018 with no advisories and therefore, may be driven straight away.
