The Phantom VI was an ultra-exclusive rolling chassis made from 1968-1990. From 1968 to 1973 it was manufactured by Rolls-Royce Ltd., and during 1973-1990, by its successor, Rolls-Royce Motors. Most of the whole production of 374 units were bodied as limousines, a few landaulettes (12), and at least one as a convertible, and some hearses (4). The Phantom VI was used, until 2002, as official state car by the British Queen Elizabeth II. Based on the Phantom V, the Phantom VI had a re-styled dashboard and was powered by an engine derived from the current Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Most of the coachwork was created by Mulliner Park Ward. The Phantom VI was the last Rolls-Royce with a separate chassis built at the London Rolls-Royce coachworks at Hythe Road, Willesden. It featured coil springs to the front, leaf springs to the rear, and drum brakes on all four wheels, later cars having hydraulic power assistance. The car was powered by a V8 6,230cc engine with twin SU carburettors and coupled to a four-speed automatic gearbox. The limousine was based on its predecessor the Phantom V with many improvements and some alterations to the exterior, notably a lower radiator grille and a sloping bonnet.
The cars were used extensively by the British Royal family, world leaders, Heads of State and captains of industry. Those owned by Elizabeth II were official state cars, adapted for that purposed with a flag staff and illuminated heraldic shield above the windscreen. Having been retired from active service in 2002, both are now on public display, one in the royal motor museum at Sandringham and the other in the special garage aboard HMY Britannia in Leith, Edinburgh. The Governor of Hong Kong used a Rolls-Royce Phantom V for ceremonial occasions. It was removed from Hong Kong by the Royal Navy immediately following the handover to China on 1 July 1997.
The limousine-bodied example on show today comes from the stable of a long term owner of Rolls-Royce Phantoms with over 20 to his name in previous years, as well as many other Rolls-Royce models. His knowledge of the marque is second to none and so it was not unusual for him to order one from the factory with additional leaf springs to the rear which, whilst it would then ride slightly high when empty, with passengers, it rode perfectly straight and level. A trick used by only the experienced and this car is a good example of this treatment.
Ordered with the usual refinements, such as an electric division, electric windows and face forward occasional seats, the car has dual air-conditioning, a cocktail bar and dual stereo units for front and rear. Finished in Masons Black over Astral blue with dark blue hide to the front and rear, dark blue carpets and lamb's wool overrugs to rear. The quality of paintwork is good with additional coach-lines and flag-pole mounts to both front wings and dark glass to the rear quarter windows. The interior is in excellent condition throughout, including the cut-glass decanter and glasses and the walnut door cappings are in excellent condition and, as you would expect for a professionally kept motorcar, it runs perfectly.
Built for R.G. Booth, its first owner, and then owned by further private owners. There is a history file included in the sale together with a new MoT test certificate and V5C registration document, it represents a remarkable motorcar with well below average mileage and fabulous original condition. The tools are all complete, rare to find for a car of this age.
The car was used by President Ronald Reagan for a visit to the UK during the 1990's for a visit to the Oxford University Union as well as a visit to Keeble College. It has also carried many high profile passengers during its lifetime, including Elizabeth Taylor and several Heads of State.
