Introduced in 3.8 litre form in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type caused a sensation when it appeared with instantly classic lines and 150mph top speed. While, inevitably, the car's stupendous straight-line performance and gorgeous looks grabbed the headlines, there was a lot more to the E-Type beneath the skin. The newcomer's design owed much to that of the racing D-Type and, indeed, the E-Type would be one of the last great sports cars developed directly from a successful competition ancestor. Just as in the D-Type, a monocoque tub formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular space frame extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the same 3.8-litre, triple-carburettor, 'S' unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. With a claimed 265 horsepower on tap, the E-Type's performance did not disappoint. Firstly, because it weighed around 500lb less than the XK150 and secondly, because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.
This stunning, early example from the second year of production is finished in its rare and original colour scheme of black with a black hide interior as confirmed by the accompanying Heritage Trust Certificate. Estimates suggest around 70 Series I E-Types originally finished in black (including 4.2's) survive today; it is refreshing to see this iconic shape in black.
Built on 28th November 1962 and dispatched on 15th December, the first owner, Jon Bondner of Berkeley, California, took delivery of the car through original distributor Jaguar Cars of New York.
The Heritage Trust certificate confirms that the engine block and head are matching numbers completing the originality of the car. In 2013-2014, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration bringing it to its current condition, with a photographic record contained in the cars history file. For the last few years, the car has been part of a significant UK collection and is supplied with EU taxes paid documentation and a US Certificate of Title as well as an Operating, Maintenance and Service handbook. Registration in the UK is a simple procedure and its new owner being the first recorded keeper. A stunning and graceful example of arguably the most desirable variant of the iconic E-Type.
