We are delighted to offer a truly magnificent motor car created by a very determined gentleman who is, not only the current owner, but also the one who set out to learn the necessary skills to turn his idea into a reality. The class winning Le Mans Triumph Spitfires and the lightweight competition E-Types inspired the idea. His vision was to create a fine handling and quick motor car that could be driven through France and compete at hill climb events. The donor car was a Triumph Mk. III GT6 of 1972 vintage. The car was completely stripped and shot blasted. A rear body tub, Spitfire floorpans and Mk. III Spitfire scuttle were acquired and the highly respected Mark Davis, of MD Restorations, ensured that the basic shell was completed to a high standard. With the structure and chassis now sound, the painstaking work of creating the shape began. Constrained, only by the basic shell, the aluminium panels were formed in the traditional manner, ply wood formers creating the profile and the aluminium shaped and worked over them and welded in several sections; all done by eye. The bonnet was the main challenge and if you recognise some Italian connection here then you would be correct. An Alfa Romeo Giulietta TZ bonnet was the inspiration and Circuit Motor Bodies were tasked to create this one-piece front end. Effectively, the TZ bonnet shape was reduced in width and supported by an internal frame. A Spitfire Mk. III windscreen and frame were incorporated into the design to give a lower roof line. The hatch, front scuttle and screen surround remain in steel, it was thought too impractical to create these in alloy.
The attention now turns to the mechanical side of this creation. This standard Triumph six cylinder engine was considered too heavy so was discarded. A Triumph 1500cc unit was sourced a rebuilt by Mark Shilliber using bespoke forged pistons and a rally specification camshaft. Twin-twin choke Weber carburetors supply the fuel, exhaust is via the SAH manifold and stainless steel system - the engine dyno test resulting in a very respectful power output of 106bhp at 5500rpm at the wheels. The gearbox is a Mk. III three-rail close-ratio unit with the D-Type overdrive operating on third and fourth gears. Every other item on this motor car has been rebuilt; the suspension was fitted with Gaz adjustable shock absorbers with blue Polybush bushing and the front spring pans are adjustable. At the rear, the drive shafts are CV jointed with aluminium lower wishbones fitted, the result is none of that drive shaft wind up or wheel tuck under that afflicted the marque. The interior invites you in, the seats having been recovered to a high standard and a Spitfire Mk. III dashboard, re-finished by Chapman & Cliff is fitted. A set of JBW Minilite style wheels were fitted with Michelin XAS 155-80-13 tyres. Once completed and assembled, the car was tested and shaken down; the coachwork, at this time, remaining in bare aluminium. A decision was made to completely strip the car once more and finish the coachwork to a high standard in the colour of French Blue as presented today. On a recent test, this extraordinary example performed very well, the handling sharp, excellent acceleration and pulling to a stop reassuringly; all no doubt due to the 300kg weight saving over the original donor car. Accompanying the car is a large file of receipts and invoices, a magazine with the Triumph featured within and several photographs during the build. This Triumph GT4 creation is UK registered as a Triumph GT6 and is recorded with the correct colour and engine size; it is accompanied by an MoT test certificate valid until May 2018.
