The original Porsche 911, with its famous and durable design, was introduced in the autumn of 1963 replacing the 356 and manufactured until 1989. The latter's rear-engined layout was retained, but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the body shell and dropped the 356's in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its original format, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat six 1,991cc engine produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed; it would eventually grow to more than three litres and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300bhp. The first of countless upgrades came in 1966 with the announcement of the 911S. Distinguished by its stylish Fuchs five-spoke alloy wheels, the 'S' featured a heavily revised engine producing 160bhp - an increase of 30% over the standard 911, increasing the top speed to 140mph. Other improvements included Koni shock absorbers, a front anti-roll bar and more powerful ventilated disc brakes. In 1967, Porsche introduced the 911T model and subsequently a 911E version; however the 911S was the most desirable and with only 3,174 Porsche 911S's manufactured, good quality surviving examples are rare and highly collectable.
This magnificent 911S was manufactured on 17th August 1967 and was shipped to AFN, being one of two 1968 model year cars delivered to them in September 1967. Both cars were registered on the same day, the 4th September, one as AFN's demonstrator car together with the car we have for sale, chassis number 11800138, which was registered to Mr. G. Berry of Market Harborough. Undoubtedly, Mr. Berry was the first private individual in the UK to own a 911S; he loved the car so much he continued to own the car until June 2000. The second owner was a Mr. R. Willis who was the custodian of OUW 6F until June 2011 when the current vendor purchased her. The vendor is a very knowledgeable Porsche enthusiast and has been restoring this matching numbers example for the last six years. The bodywork has been stripped and any replacement panels were genuine Porsche items, the ivory white paintwork was carried out by a respected Porsche specialist. The interior was removed, revealing the dash-top signature and VIN from the factory in 1967. Where necessary interior panels were replaced although the vendor together with Garry Hall at Classic FX trimming have painstakingly tried to retain as much of the original trim where possible, the rare elephant hide seats are in splendid condition. The matching numbers engine and gearbox have been totally refurbished and rebuilt and, at the time of writing, have covered no mileage. This Porsche 911S is as close to the specification and condition when she left the factory 50 years ago as you could expect, even the original Fuchs alloy wheels have the date stamped on them. She is supplied with the original buff logbook, a current MoT test certificate and an interesting history folder; over the past 50 years few sports cars have proved as versatile as Porsche's perennial 911, it is difficult to find early example Porsches and even more difficult to find one in this condition.
