The successor to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT coupé was the 1750 GT Velocé. It was fitted with a larger engine of 1779cc capacity rather than 1590cc of the earlier model. For marketing purposes, the new GTVs were described as 1750s, a term that harked back to the success of the 1750s of the 1930s. Amongst many detail changes, the front panel now became flush with the bonnet and wings, eliminating the previous step front appearance of the Sprint GT. Other stylistic differences included twin headlights set into a matt black grille, and in what became known retrospectively as the Mk. I 1750, the front sidelight/indicators were incorporated into the outer reaches of the bumper; later Mk. II 1750s had their sidelight/indicator assemblies mounted on the front panel beneath the headlights.
We are delighted to offer this Mk. I, righthand drive 1750 GTV. Originally sold in Cyprus in 1969, this GTV arrived on UK shores two years later in 1971. Between 2002 and 2003, a restoration was undertaken and completed to a high standard as evident by the condition displayed today. The current owner purchased the Alfa Romeo in 2005 and, whilst in his ownership, has been kept in a de-humidified garage. Also, anything required with regard to maintenance has been carried out by one of the UK's leading Alfa Romeo specialists, Jamie Porter at the Alfa Workshop, Royston. Presented in Alfa Romeo Rosso, this 1750 GTV looks very attractive and has benefitted from the addition of an Alfaholics fast road suspension kit and 14" replica GTA alloy wheels. Settle into the correct Mk. I seats and you are presented with a dished wood rim steering wheel and instruments with odometer and rev. counter (with oil pressure gauge within) in twin binnacles in front of the driver, the other auxiliary instruments being angled towards the driver and are set in the centre console above the gear lever. Looking around the interior, the headlining is in good order as are the wood facings upon the dashboard and centre console; in fact, the ambiance of this interior suggests that it is one of quality. On test, the engine started easily and soon warmed to normal temperature. On a test drive, the Alfa Romeo felt assured with easy gear changes and with the brakes pulling the car to a stop with confidence. A well presented history file includes a UK V5 registration document, old MoT test certificates and invoices. We are advised that this Alfa Romeo will arrive at the sale with a fresh MoT test certificate. This is an attractive Alfa Romeo Mk. I GTV, the model that is most sought after by the aficionados of the marque, certainly ticks many boxes in the desirability stakes and, we believe, is offered with a realistic and tempting estimate.
