In the early 1970s, Porsche had designs on racing a turbocharged version of the 911, in support of which they planned to create a homologation special along the lines of the Carrera 2.7 litre RS. A change in the rules negated the need to sell a precise number of street legal race vehicles, but the company decided to continue with the project anyway - the Porsche 911 Turbo or 930 was born. The 930 was introduced at the Paris Motor Show of 1974 and produced from 1975 to 1989, during which time it was the fastest production car available on the German market. It was based around the Carrera RS 3.0, the engine from which was modified courtesy of turbo technology originally developed for the 917/30 CAN-AM cars. Initially, power output was 260bhp but from 1978 it was increased to 300bhp by raising the engine capacity to 3.3 litres. To accommodate the extra performance over the RS 3.0, the 930 sported revised suspension, larger brakes and a robust, four-speed gearbox. In order to help deliver the power to the road, a rear spoiler was fitted and a wider rear wheel and tyre package was squeezed under specially flared arches. In skilled hands, a 930 will show a clean pair of heels to most of its rivals.
The Porsche 911/930 Turbo Cabriolet is the only 'normal production' Porsche cabriolet to be equipped with the air-cooled turbo engine. Moreover, only approximately 100 were produced and just 50 righthand drive examples were built. Built with the 3.3 litre air-cooled turbo engine and later G50 five-speed gearbox, the car generates over 330bhp and has a 0-60 time of approximately five seconds.
Sourced from a private collection in Oxfordshire, this beautifully presented example in black with black heated leather interior has just had a service with Birks Motorworks of Thame, Oxfordshire. Supplied with a fantastic history file including comprehensive documented history from servicing to invoices and MoT test certificates to warrant the mileage, this Porsche has been very well cared for. Purchased by our current vendor in 2014 the car has since then been kept in a warmed, dehumidified garage and registered as off the road (SORN) for use on his private estate only, therefore the mileage has been kept low and condition of this cabriolet kept extremely high.
The car is now offered with an MoT test certificate valid until April 2017 and we are informed that, importantly, everything is working exactly as it should. Presented in truly excellent condition in the finest colour combination, this Porsche surely represents outstanding value in today's market place and a genuine investment opportunity as well as providing an opportunity to drive an iconic 80's Porsche.
