The Mercedes-Benz W113 roadsters, designed by Paul Bracq, were produced from 1963 through to 1971. All models boast an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection with rear-wheel drive but are also equipped with independent rear suspension; a feature that greatly improved road handling. Most of these early SL's were sold with both the removable hard-top and a soft-top in the so called 'Coupé/Roadster' configuration. The 230 SL made a remarkable debut at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show in March 1963, where Nallinger introduced it as follows: 'It was our aim to create a very safe and fast sports car with high performance which, despite its sports characteristics, provides a very high degree of travelling comfort.'
This highly desirable 250 SL with automatic gearbox is in superb condition throughout as you would expect from a fully restored example. To begin with, the body has been completely sand-blasted then a process added to prevent any future corrosion. The body has then been painted in the correct and original factory colour. The floor-pans and sills were replaced and the boot area renovated. A new windscreen has been fitted and 70% of the rubber seals are new. The hard-top is in excellent condition and the soft-top is brand new. All chromework has been re-chromed and the electrical system cleaned and partially replaced by new parts. New shock absorbers and suspension parts have been fitted and the braking system has been overhauled using many new parts. The interior has also had a similar treatment with all upholstery replaced, wood renovated and new hard-top hood lining.
Complete with original Mercedes-Benz service books from day one including annual inspection entries and reviews, this investment quality 250 SL has really had the full treatment. Described by the vendor as between 9/10 and 10/10 in every respect, both collectors and enthusiasts should certainly shortlist this 250 SL for further consideration.
