Since its introduction in 1963, the 911 has undergone continual development although the basic concept has remained little changed. In 1973, the Carrera name was re-introduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsche's class victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the 1950's. The RS was built so that Porsche could enter racing formula which demanded that a certain minimum number of production cars were made. The most notable advances in 1984 were the introduction of the 3.2-litre engine. With 231bhp on tap, the new 'boxer' motor endowed the Carrera with a level of performance approaching that of the original 911 Turbo of 1974; the bald statistics being a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 152mph. The 3.2 Carrera, produced from 1984 to 1989, is regarded by many as the best of the air-cooled models thanks to its blend of classic good looks, scintillating performance and relatively low cost of ownership, all subsequent models being more complex machines that need deeper pockets to maintain.

This 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Sport Convertible, fitted with the 3.2 litre engine and five-speed gearbox, was first registered in September 1984. The previous keeper had owned B432 BPP for some 20 years clearly taking a great deal of pride in owning such an iconic vehicle keeping it fully maintained. Having covered only 6,000 miles since a fully documented and photographed engine rebuild and, more recently, a complete brake overhaul, new softtop, suspension bushes and a bare metal repaint in the original and rare Porsche Glacier blue colour, this excellent Carrera Sport Convertible is in exemplary condition. Complimented by a dark blue leather interior and tailored carpets. Supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in May 2017, all the handbooks, old MoT test certificates dating back to 1990, a file of invoices showing the recent work carried out and a photo album of the engine rebuild. This well-sorted convertible is ready to be used and enjoyed immediately. Air-cooled 911 prices have been increasing rapidly of late; this Carrera convertible is not only one for the purists and collectors but one for the drivers.
