Lot 133 - 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL Roadster
|Estimate||£12,000 - £16,000|
|Result||Sold - £19,320|
Introduced early in 1971, this impressive two-seater sports car replaced the 280 SL; the body and chassis of the third generation Mercedes-Benz SL was considerably heavier and longer than its predecessor but still showed a resemblance. The 3.5-Litre, V8 engine underwent slight modifications to those being used on other models and the gear shift lever was placed on the floor in the centre of the car. The standard transmission provided a top speed of 130mph and a very respectable 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds. As with the previous generation SLs, the vehicle came as an open roadster with removable hard top and went on to become one of the longest running styles from Mercedes-Benz. A range of engine sizes were available; one of the more powerful being the 4.5-Litre unit.
This stunning example of Mercedes-Benz's 'Little Black Dress' boasts just one former keeper and is presented in near faultless silver metallic with a black unmarked leather interior, having been subject to a very high standard cosmetic restoration by a Mercedes-Benz approved body shop in late 2015. This roadster not only has the engine and chassis to boast about, but is also complemented by a very low mileage and an almost fully-stamped service history until year 2000 at which point the car was laid up and stored, covering only another 1,400 miles. Accompanied by an MoT test certificate valid until November 2016, this has the all important hard top and, upon closer inspection, even has a written journal from the former keeper detailing care in his ownership, coupled with an extensive history file, handbooks and stamped maintenance booklet alongside a wealth of MoT test certificates to warrant the impressive mileage. Clearly an exceptional example of this very popular vehicle, this beautiful Roadster, offered with a great history, the reassurance of extensive professional cosmetic works and a very appealing colour combination is sure to be a very popular drop-top among our auction attendees.
