The Alfa Romeo Coupé, styled by Bertone, caused a sensation when it was introduced in 1963. Based on the Giulia Berlina platform introduced a year earlier, its stunning looks, twin cam all alloy power unit and sublime handling all contributed to the period road test reports extolling their virtues. The powerful and lovely sounding engines, slick five speed gearboxes and the nimble and well balanced handling characteristics led many to believe that they drove better than their contemporaries from Modena and Stuttgart. The GT 1300 Junior model first appeared in 1965 and was produced to avoid higher taxes. In spite of this, performance from the 1290cc engine was brisk with the cars being capable of achieving over 100 mph.
The fine example of the Scalino (step front) offered today is presented in Pino Verde (pine green) with the evocative sounding Wild Boar Skai interior. The little coupé records having covered 106,000km that equates to approximately 66,000 miles. This GT Junior is a most original example that still boasts the correct stainless steel bumpers, lights, tools and even comes with an eight track stereo/radio. The coachwork is excellent and still displays the original spot welds around the wheels' arch lips. With this and the fabulous panel gaps, boot space and engine bay, we may determine that, although it has been painted during its life (very common on Italian motor cars) this GT Junior remains in remarkable and original condition and has not suffered from the poor repair works that many display today. The vendor informs us that the Junior is a revelation to drive with a delicacy and a precision of handling that many current manufacturers would be envious of.
Imported from Italy in 2014, this Alfa Romeo GT Junior comes complete with Italian documents, a UK V5 registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until February 2017. This little Scalino represents an opportunity to experience one of the best of its type in regard to this classic Italian marque.
