Lot 245 - 1973 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk. I
|£36,000 - £42,000
The Mk. I Ford Escort was introduced in the UK at the end of 1967, making its show debut at Brussels Motor Show in January 1968 and replacing the successful long running Anglia. Escorts became successful as a rally car and eventually went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time. The Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960's and early 1970's; arguably the Escort's greatest victory was in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally being driven by Finnish legend, Hannu Mikkola. This gave rise to the Escort Mexico special edition road versions in honour of the rally car. In addition to the Mexico, the RS1600 was developed which used a Kent engine block with a 16-valve Cosworth cylinder head. As well as higher performance engines and sports suspension, these models featured strengthened bodyshells, making them ideal for rallying. Ford also produced an RS2000 model as an alternative to the somewhat temperamental RS1600, featuring a two litre Pinto engine. This also chalked up some rally and racing victories and pre-empted the hot-hatch market as a desirable but affordable performance road car.
This genuine RS2000 was restored over a long period and completed in 2006. The restoration was carried out by renowned Escort specialists CWC Restorations and the quality has to be seen to be fully appreciated; however, the fact the car has won a number of significant awards in recent times is an indication to the calibre of this rare and desirable classic Ford. Our inspection confirmed YFX 748M to be of exceptional standard and the fastidious vendor has kept her in concours condition under his stewardship. The blue paintwork is unmarked as is the black interior; the under bonnet area is comparable to the rest of the car with everywhere presenting in superb order. Supplied with a V5 document and an MoT test certificate valid until 20th May 2016, together with two comprehensive history folders. Escort RS2000's are rare and with classic Ford values increasing significantly of late, this magnificent example is sure to whet the appetite of the serious collector.
