From 1990 to 1995, Mercedes-Benz sold a high-performance version of the W 124, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E. It was created in close co-operation with Porsche; each one being hand-built by Porsche and transported back and forth between the Mercedes-Benz plant and Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany during assembly, with a full 18 days being taken to complete each car. The 500 E had a naturally aspirated 5.0 litre, V8 engine derived from the 500 SL (R 129) and the brakes were also SL components. The 500 E was manufactured as a four seat saloon and in lefthand drive only. The leather seats were supplied by Recaro with the fronts being electrically operated and heated. Called the 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' by the press, performance tests of the day yielded impressive results with 0-62 mph times of 5.5 to 6.0 seconds. The top speed was 161.5mph with the engine speed limited to 6000rpm. With its aggressive stance, 1.5 inch wider track, lower profile, flared wheel arches, side skirts, front air-dam and wider tyres, the 500 E is easily distinguished from its lesser brethren.

The 500 E offered today was sold new to Japan and has only recently been imported into the UK, so benefits from never having been driven on salty roads. The Mercedes features a number of cosmetic changes to bring it in line with the later E 500 specification, with a later bonnet, radiator grille, bootlid and lights. The coachwork is finished in metallic black with a matching black leather interior and it presents in excellent condition, with the odometer showing 146,000 kms, which is quite low for a car capable of covering a great many miles. The car will be supplied with a UK registration certificate and a full service and MoT test will have been carried out prior to the sale. Some service invoices will also accompany the car.
Already considered a classic, this hand-built Mercedes-Benz offers incredible performance for the money and will surely be an appreciating asset.
