Lot 322 - 1962 Aermacchi 350cc Ala D’Oro 'circa 1962'
|Estimate||£6,000 - £8,000|
In1960, Harley Davidson bought a share in the Italian Aermacchi Company and the new company became Harley Badged Aermacchi, the 175 and 250 were produced and formed part of their sport range, in 1964 Aermacchi produced a 350 that generated up to 37bhp at 8,000rpm.
The Ala d'Oro ('Gold Wing') had the same basic engine that won important races throughout the world. The 350 long-stroke engine was a classic four-stroke model with an almost horizontal cylinder and rod-and-rocker distribution, which most racing people had considered outmoded as early as the 1920s. They were not outdistanced so much by the development of the four-stroke racing engine as by the extraordinary rise of the two-stroke. Although proving quite successful in the early 1960's the marque became a very popular mount at both club and national level, they also held their own at International events in both the 250 and 350 classes.
This motorcycle formed part of a private collection near Milan where it's spent a very quiet life for the past 20 years. Now deserving another enthusiastic owner who will continue to cherish this piece of racing history; very few early 350cc Ala d' Oro race bikes ever find their way onto the open market making this bike quite a opportunity.
