We are proud to offer a rather unusual but very useful version of the Triumph TR4. The GTR4 Dové was a fastback conversion manufactured by Thomas Harrington Coachbuilders of Hove in Sussex who converted TR4s for the Wimbledon based agent, L F Dove Ltd. The conversion featured a fastback roof, a 15 gallon fuel tank, fold down 2+2 rear seating and a rear hatch making the Dové a practical long distance tourer. It is not exactly known how many were built; speculation varies between 40 and 55 but less than 20 are believed to have survived.
This Wedgewood blue example was restored from a wreck by Andy Smith in 1998 and was the lead feature in the August 2001 issue of Practical Classics. It was subsequently sold and exported to Switzerland where it was used for road rallies and eventually ending up in Holland where it stood for five years. It was purchased by the current owner in October 2012 requiring some re-commissioning. Once back in the UK, these works were undertaken and included some sensible upgrades. The cylinder head was removed and overhauled and now runs on unleaded fuel. A rebuilt gearbox and overdrive were fitted and, whilst the gearbox was out, a new clutch was also fitted. Further works and additions include; a tubular stainless steel exhaust manifold and system, a rebuilt radiator and electric fan, a thin fan belt conversion, overhauled hydraulic system, new rear brake linings and shoes, new front discs and pads and a set of new chrome wire wheels and tyres. The instruments have been overhauled and re-calibrated. The interior required new carpets and the seats were sympathetically restored with new piping added. The L F Dove Ltd moniker adorns the enamelled dashboard. The most worrying job was the replacement of the hardtop rubbers and headlining. This involved the removal of the hardtop and was carried out successfully judging by the excellent panel fit. This handsome GTR4, on a recent test, starts easily and displays excellent oil pressure when hot. On the road it is reassuring with everything working as it should.
Fortunately, on return to the UK, the Dové was re-issued with its original registration number and currently has a long MoT test certificate. This GTR4 Dové represents a fabulous opportunity to acquire something rather stylish whilst being a practical long distance tourer.
