The BMW E36 was the third generation of the '3' Series compact executive cars produced by BMW. The successor to the E30 was eventually replaced by the E46 3 Series in 1998. The biggest change technically - apart from that sleek new styling - was the fitment of a new independent rear suspension set-up, known as the Z-axle. It was a multilink set-up, which helped maintain the 3-Series' position as the market sector's best handling car. The E36 experienced enormous success in the market and laid strong foundations for any future 3 series to come. Also known as the 'dolphin shape', the E36 was named in Car and Driver Magazine's '10 Best Cars' list.
