In 1970, BMW launched three new models having engine capacities
of 500cc (R50/5), 600cc (R60/5), and 750cc (R75/5). The 'slash-5'
series came out just in time to meet the rising demand for sport
bikes with the /5 models all air-cooled, four-stroke engines with
hemispherical combustion chambers. The camshaft is driven by a
duplex chain and is located below the crankshaft, this reversed
arrangement improves ground clearance for the same center of
gravity and assists lubrication of the camshaft.
Unlike the /2 models, the /5 models are equipped with telescopic front forks, 12-volt alternator, electrics, standard tachometer and turn signals. The /5 series was the first series to be manufactured completely in Berlin as by 1969, all of Munich's production capacity was needed for automobiles. Berlin, with its well-trained workforce, was an obvious choice.
This imposing series five has been remarkably unused since its creation in 1971. It is offered in near-showroom condition and the vendor describes this bike as unused and incredibly original, he has had the motorcycle dry stored in a static collection since its purchase in 2007. Should the new owner wish to use this R60, some light reconditioning may be required. Presented in correct colors and accompanied by a V5 registration certificate, original owners manual, light history and past MoT test certificates, we would challenge you to find a more original R60 this side of BMW's own museum in Weisel.
