Lot 386 - 1985 Morgan 4/4 Roadster
|Estimate||£13,000 - £16,000|
|Result||Sold - £19,320|
The Morgan Plus 4 was the Morgan Motor Company's first car with four wheels, introduced in 1936 following the end of production of the famed three wheeled motorcycle engine models. Its model designation '4/4' stood for four wheels and four cylinders.
Apart from a break during World War II (and the period March 1951 to September 1955), the 4/4 has been in continuous production from its debut right up to the present day and its engine capacity has increased from the 1122cc Coventry Climax engine in 1936 to a 1.8 litre Ford engine by 2004.
Always a popular choice for sports car enthusiasts across the globe, the combination of the typically British 1930's styling with its flowing wings, modern performance and reliability have ensured the Morgan is as popular today as it ever has been.
Declared new on the 13th June, the vehicle was supplied by Morgan specialist, Harry Arnold and has remained in single ownership to this day. A local garage has looked after it for a number of years now although, when the proprietor first met the owner, the car had remained in a garage unused for many years. This was due to a poor repair to the water pump drive and on-going family commitments. The car was then restored and enjoyed once again. All works are supported with invoices and included a removal of all panels and the car refinished in the original colour, the engine was fully serviced including cambelts and water pump drive, the radiator and heater matrix overhauled, new shock absorbers, chassis and brakes overhaul, new wire wheels and an interior overhaul to retain all the original trim and fittings. A new battery and MoT test certificate were supplied and carried out at which time the car was returned to the owner. Sadly, shortly after, the owner became unwell and subsequently passed away. The car has covered around 30 miles after all the work and will have a new battery and MoT test certificate prior to the sale.
This well prepared example of Morgan's iconic 4/4 presents well and has had sympathetic use over the years, the ash frame is good and tight with no movement and all systems function as intended. Ready to be returned to immediate use, this handsome example comes complete with paperwork, all-weather equipment and the promise of enormous fun...
