The D-type Jaguar has a very special place in motoring history. As a purpose built race car, its achievements were outstanding as a Le Mans winner. To succeed at Le Mans was to succeed in the world of car sales and having won the famous race three times in a row, the car became an instant classic. The D-type's exquisite lines surely make it a contender for the most beautiful car ever designed. As well as the limited numbers built and the multi-million pound price tag associated with these symbolic cars today, it is entirely natural that copies will and have been made.
Constructed originally by a private professional engineer and racing driver based in Wiltshire, it was built over a four year period. Mechanically, the car is based on Jaguar running gear with a Jaguar 4.2 litre straight six engine, fed by triple Weber carburettors. Cooling is via the radiator with additional Kenlow electric fans. The interior is functional, just as the originals, with all the necessary switches readily to hand, the doors normally always falling shut, have an ingenious and discreet 'prop' to hold them open. The product of an engineer used to simply 'solving problems'. Four-point harnesses and stunning paintwork set the car off well. The oil pressure and water temperatures read exactly as they should whilst cold and hot and the view over the bonnet surely gets the adrenalin pumping even when the car is at standstill.
