The Ferrari Mondial, the name reminiscent of the 500 Mondial race cars from the 1950s, was a replacement model for the Ferrari 308 GT4. The Mondial was the first Ferrari where the entire engine/gearbox/rear suspension assembly was mounted on a detachable steel subframe, making engine removal for a major rebuild or cylinder head removal much easier than it was on previous models. The steel coachwork was taken care of by Carrozzeria Scaglietti and built over a lightweight steel box section space frame. The first Mondial engine, although a DOHC design, used just two valves per cylinder. The later Quattrovalvole or QV introduced a new four valve cylinder head, the combustion chamber design was purportedly based on the early eighties Formula 1 engine and produced a respectable 240 hp.
This 1986 Ferrari Mondial QV Cabriolet offered has been in the current ownership some 18 years and still boasts the low mileage of circa 41,300. The coachwork and interior presents well and an attractive and spotless engine bay supports the mileage. The hood is in excellent order and in addition to the electric windows, keeps the inclement weather at bay and whilst stowed, the hood is covered by the rare optional hood bag. The service record book and instructional manual accompany the invoices within the history file. On a recent 200 mile round trip to the Auto Italia Day at Brooklands, the Ferrari performed very competently with reassuring handling, ride and excellent performance from the engine and gearbox.
Driven 80 miles to the sale, this UK registered Mondial has an MoT test certificate that expires in April 2015 and current road fund licence valid until the end of September 2014. With Ferrari prices steadily rising surely this model cannot stay at this low for long; an opportunity indeed.
