Bicycle manufacturer William Morris introduced his first car, the 'Bullnose' Oxford, in 1913, starting a tradition of Morris Oxfords that was to continue on and off right up until 1971. With an enviable reputation for reliability and quality, by the end of the 1920s Morris had become Britain's largest car manufacturer holding a 51% share of its home market. Although smaller models such as the Minor and the Ten was the mainstay of the range, Morris also maintained an interest in the larger cars. A completely new car was announced for 1934 with a longer and stronger chassis with flexible mounting for the 2002cc engine. The gearbox gained synchromesh. Initially it kept the Six name (reflecting the number of cylinders in the engine) but this changed to Sixteen (which came from the car's tax horsepower category) in 1935 when it was joined by the 2561cc Twenty. It was replaced by the Fourteen / Sixteen / Eighteen range in 1935 and the Oxford name disappeared until 1948.
The vendor purchased this 1934 Morris Oxford Twenty in its present condition in 2011 from a collector who had it for over twenty five years and had started to carry out a full restoration. The engine is free and the owner tells us that it span over easily the last time he tried it. The car appears to be complete but requires extensive work to the body if it was going to be retained. This Morris Oxford is supplied with a V5C registration document showing that the registration number JG 4843 which is transferable, a recent number plate valuation of £3,500 for the number, 'buff' log book, original handbook and some photographs which were taken in the 1970's. A very rare opportunity to purchase the largest Morris from this period, with a sound chassis and running gear which is a good basis for any restoration.
